Approval for the first psychobiotics: ETAP-Lab is proud to have played a role

In partnership with Lallemand Health Solutions, Aspen Farmacêutica is bringing the first psychobiotic formulation for the gut-brain axis to the Brazilian market.

The two finished products are Probid and Probians and contain two strains of probiotics for which the following claims are now approved:

  • Lactobacillus helveticus Rosell-52 and Bifidobacterium longum Rosell-175 may contribute to the reduction of feelings of anxiety in healthy individuals.
  • Lactobacillus helveticus Rosell-52 and Bifidobacterium longum Rosell-175 contribute to the reduction of gastrointestinal complications (such as abdominal pain and nausea/vomiting) brought on by light to moderate stress in healthy individuals.

These two strains have been marketed in various countries for the last decade under the name Probio’Stick and now rebranded as Cerebiome® (Lallemand Health Solutions). Made from the same two strains of bacteria, this was hitherto the first and only probiotic to have health claims for the gut-brain axis approved, in this case by Canada’s Natural and Non-Prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD).

10 years after we predicted the beneficial effects of a probiotic mixture on mood in rodent models for the Rosell-Lallemand Institute, the resulting psychobiotics formulations are approved for the Brazilian market. #OneStepAhead

The positive effects of both strains have been demonstrated in our laboratory. Tested in our preclinical models of mood disorder, we established proof of efficacy in animals back in 2010, predicting these psychobiotic properties prior to clinical evaluation.

ETAP-Lab has been using preclinical studies to support R&D in the health-nutrition industry for 30 years now. By evaluating their efficacy and innocuity in rodents, we have contributed to the development of hundreds of compounds, many of which are now on the market.
