ETAP-Lab conducts preclinical trials in the field of skin health for the evaluation of the efficacy of products and ingredients of natural origin.
ETAP-Lab offers rodent models for wound healing, skin inflammation, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, actinic keratosis and skin cancer.
Several of these models are original and were developed and validated in healthy and diabetic rodents at the specific request of clients.
ETAP-Lab models can be adapted for evaluation of preventive or curative effects of the products tested.
Our tests
Wound healing
ETAP-Lab has strong expertise in performing efficacy studies within the field of wound healing and offers numerous models in healthy and diabetic rodents such as incisional wound, excisional wound and ischemic ulceration.
Our studies have allowed us to demonstrate healing effects of many products and ingredients of natural origin. Several of them have been the subject of scientific publications and are currently on the market.

Skin inflammation
For 15 years now, ETAP-Lab has been evaluating the preventive antiinflammatory effects of products and ingredients of natural origin, and also probiotics, using appropriate methodologies.
In addition to classic inflammatory biomarker assays and pathological methods, ETAP-Lab has developed specific scoring scales to allow a detailed analysis of the results, and the study of rodent behaviour which allows to evaluate the animals’ pain and well-being.

Psoriasis
ETAP-Lab has acquired considerable expertise in the preclinical evaluation of anti-psoriatic effects of products and ingredients of natural origin.
In particular, ETAP-Lab participated in the development of a plant extract for the company Plant Advanced Technologies by performing efficacy and safety studies, and its clinical evaluation will soon begin.
To complete the classic inflammatory biomarker assays (cytokines and infiltration of immune cells) and pathological methods, ETAP-Lab has developed specific scoring scales to allow a detailed analysis of the results, and the study of rodent behaviour which allows to evaluate the animals’ pain and well-being and to differentiate the activity of products tested.

Atopic dermatitis
ETAP-Lab has recently developed and validated a preclinical model of atopic dermatis in mice allowing us to demonstrate the efficacy of products and ingredients of natural origin on this skin disorder.
To complete the classic inflammatory biomarker assays (cytokines, immunoglobulins, infiltration of immune cells, histamine) and pathological methods, ETAP-Lab has developed specific scoring scales to allow a detailed analysis of the results, and the study of rodent behaviour which allows to evaluate the animals’ pain and well-being and to differentiate the activity of products tested.

Actinic keratosis
ETAP-Lab has acquired considerable expertise in sunburns’ prevention with products and ingredients of natural origin able to counteract the erythematogenic effect of UV exposure.
Inflammatory biomarker assays, in vivo imaging and pathological methods implemented allow to differentiate the activity of products tested.

Skin cancer
ETAP-Lab has acquired considerable expertise in skin cancer prevention with products and ingredients of natural origin able to counteract chemically- or UV-induced tumors.
Inflammatory and tumor biomarker assays, in vivo imaging and pathological methods implemented allow to differentiate the activity of products tested.

Methods & Technologies
We routinely carryout:
- Cytokine, immunoglobulin and hormone assays
- Haematological and biochemical blood parameters
- Histological analyses with specific scoring scales interpreted by a senior pathologist
- Behavioural tests to evaluate animals’ pain and well-being
On request we are able to conduct or to select a service provider to conduct complementary analyses on biological samples collected in the course of studies and necessary to the objectivation of the effects of your products.
ETAP-Lab has cutting-edge equipments for the implementation of study protocols:
- UV irradiation system for the induction of atopic dermatitis and skin tumors
- C-Cube camera, non-invasive imaging device for repeated observations of the skin
- A surgery room dedicated to the induction of certain skin disorders
- A dedicated behavioural room equipped with a video-tracking system allowing automated analysis of animal behaviour
Moreover, the methodologies and good practices implemented by ETAP-Lab serve to increase the predictive value of study results:
- Respect for animals’ chronobiology
- Use of enrichment for animals’ weel-being
- Respect of the chronopharmacology of the products tested
- Systematic use of reference products
- Observation and handling of animals using a clinical approach to bring both expected and unexpected symptoms to light
