CONTACT AN EXPERTETAP-LAB is an independent, preclinical CRO that provides specialist research services to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and nutraceutical industries.
ETAP-LAB advises its customers and tests the efficacy of drug candidates, medical devices, and health products, based on a comprehensive portfolio of translational models.
With over 35 years of experience, ETAP-LAB has developed renowned scientific expertise in various therapeutic areas, including dermatology, cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases, as well as central nervous system diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases in particular.
ETAP-LAB combines its scientific expertise with the highest industry standards to provide a range of innovative and controlled models.
ETAP-LAB provides a comprehensive range of preclinical pharmacology services, from in vitro lead optimization to non-GLP animal testing (POC, PK/PD modeling and non-regulatory safety pharmacology).
The ETAP group
The ETAP Group was formed in 2023, following the acquisition of SYNCROSOME, ETAP-LAB’s sister company. Key figures on the ETAP Group:
Since the takeover by the current team in 2014, ETAP-LAB has experienced a phase of hypergrowth, reflecting its position as a renowned expert among its customers. This success is the result of all the hard work and dedication of our employees, which makes me incredibly proud.
Specialists in animal behavior from the outset
ETAP stands for “EThologie APpliquée” or “Applied Ethology” in English. Ethology, or the science of animal behavior, is where the company’s origins lie, stemming from the Laboratoire de Biologie et Physiologie du Comportement of Prof. Bertrand Krafft (URA CNRS 1293, Henri-Poincaré University, Nancy). Originally specializing in psychopharmacology, its services were expanded to include Neurology, which still accounts for over 50% of the company’s business today. We apply this behavioral approach to all our in vivo models, including those for dermatology and cardiovascular diseases, thus bringing high translational added value to our study results.
Our mission
Preclinical CROs now play a strategic role in the R&D process, with biotech companies and major industrial players in the sector increasingly looking to outsource this work. ETAP-LAB’s mission is to provide its customers with an exceptional range of preclinical pharmacology services, combining the expertise of a research laboratory with the rigorous standards of a CRO, and thus significantly improving drug candidate selection.

In this way, we build lasting and trusted relationships with our customers, providing complete transparency in our communications at every stage.
Our driving force
For over 35 years, we have been working to develop drugs and medical devices designed by our customers to treat debilitating and chronic diseases, including diabetic ischemic ulcers, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease.
We are very proud that our high-quality in vitro and in vivo preclinical studies have contributed to the successful market launch of many innovative compounds and medical devices, which today are improving patient health and quality of life.
Our commitments
- An individual and overall commitment to excellence in customer service
- A translational and holistic preclinical approach
- A relationship centered around customer needs and satisfaction
- Scientific expertise and technical know-how
- Ethical conduct in the use of animals for scientific purposes
Innovative collaborative programs
ETAP-LAB anticipates and helps drive market change through R&D programs that provide its customers with the most cutting-edge solutions available today.
ETAP-LAB works closely with academic and industrial partners to develop preclinical models aimed at:
- Creating translational animal models applicable to human pathophysiology.
- Developing increasingly complex cellular models within microphysiological systems (MPS).
ETAP-LAB is currently a partner in four research projects funded by the French government, regional authorities, and the European Union: BIO-DIAMOND, STROKTURA, BRYOFLAM and B4B.
Three sites based in France
Our operations are spread across three sites in France (Nancy, Caen and Marseille). Our private facilities, with total floor space of 2,200 m², include the following research infrastructure:
- 1 000 m² of buildings approved by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research for the use of animals for scientific purposes (A1 animal facility), which can also accommodate Class 1 GMOs. Each laboratory is equipped with housing facilities, a microsurgery room, a behavioral platform, and areas specifically for animal husbandry.
- A cell culture laboratory (L1) with HCS imaging equipment.
- A hematology laboratory for the use of human blood samples.
- A biological analysis and immunohistochemistry laboratory.
- Equipment and areas dedicated to each therapeutic field (Vevo F2 for echocardiography, hypoxia chamber, UV irradiator, etc.).
- A translational imaging platform – privileged access to the facilities of the CYCERON center in Caen for our customers’ studies.

Our facilities and processes are regularly audited by certification bodies (ISO 9001), the DDPP (Government accreditation of the laboratory), and our customers (ethics policy and quality system).
