  • The Challenges of a CRO in Preclinical Drug Development: ETAP-LAB Featured in Gircor News

As part of a joint interview with Nicolas Violle, CEO of ETAP-LAB, and Sophie Hidalgo, Head of Animal Facilities and Animal Welfare across our three sites, Gircor highlights the key challenges faced by Contract Research Organizations (CROs) in preclinical drug development.

In a context where societal expectations, regulatory frameworks, and scientific standards are rapidly evolving, organizations like ETAP-LAB play a critical role in balancing therapeutic innovation, scientific rigor, and ethical responsibility.

“Ethology has been at the core of our practices for over 35 years.” — Nicolas Violle, CEO, ETAP-LAB

A Science-Driven and Responsible Approach to Preclinical Models

In this interview, ETAP-LAB shares its vision of responsible research, particularly in the use of rodent models in neurology (including stroke), cardiology, and dermatology.

The company is actively committed to:

    • integrating animal welfare into scientific quality
    • rigorously applying the principles of the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine)
    • developing innovative R&D programs aimed at reducing and replacing animal models

Accelerating the Shift Toward Alternative Methods

ETAP-LAB is also engaged in advancing and implementing alternative approaches, including New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and organ-on-chip technologies, which are expected to play an increasing role in the future of biomedical research.

While these methods are progressing, their broader adoption still depends on validation and regulatory acceptance.

    The challenge is two fold:

    • accelerate the development and recognition of alternatives
    • while continuously improving practices when animal models remain necessary

The Strategic Role of CROs in the Evolving Landscape

This interview highlights the pivotal role of CROs in drug development, at the intersection of academic research, the pharmaceutical industry, and regulatory requirements.

It also emphasizes the importance of transparency and public dialogue—key missions of Gircor.
